Tucked behind towering banyan trees off McGregor Boulevard, a historic Fort Myers home is awaiting new owners.
The residence for sale at 5550 Shaddelee Lane W. is located in the Bayshore Park subdivision and was constructed in 1923. Retired insurance executive Fred Hubbard built the home in one year with walls about a foot thick, according to a May 1977 story in The News-Press.
It’s listed for $3.25 million and sits on a lush 2.5 acres with an approximately 100-foot dock that leads to the Caloosahatchee River.
The large lot size is unusual for riverfront homes in the area, said Cookie Douglas, an agent with VIP Realty in Fort Myers, who is listing the residence along with her partner, Lani Belisle.
“In this day and age, everyone buys property and they just want to chop it up,” Douglas said.
The two-story, Shaddelee Lane home has received a few serious inquiries since it hit the market two months ago, Douglas said. To tour the property, potential buyers have to be preapproved by the bank.
Spanish colonial
The pink-colored structure has undergone extensive improvements and expansions through the years, but has maintained its Spanish colonial influence.
“It’s kept the character of the house, but it still has the modern conveniences,” Douglas said.
Dr. Roger Scott, 84, a retired Fort Myers surgeon and co-founder of the Museum of Medical History at Edison State College, moved into the home in 1977. He modernized the dwelling, installing central air conditioning and underground drainage, and nearly doubled the size of the home through additions, including building a second story.
The current owners, Jack, 69, and Gail Dupre, 68 — who plan to stay in Fort Myers but are selling the home in order to downsize — purchased an adjacent lot to expand the property and have made additional improvements to the home since purchasing it in 1997.
Their renovations totaled more than $100,000, including adding large concrete columns to the outside and converting an upstairs bedroom into an exercise room with sauna, among other improvements.
