Pressure to pull govt buildings from sale

Posted March 27, 2011 07:25:00

Community groups are fighting the sale of a number of state government buildings the Treasury Department is trying to off-load.

As the cash-strapped government scrambles for savings a petition to save the former Macquarie Street State School in South Hobart has already attracted about 1,000 signatures .

David Halse Rogers of the Hobart Progress Association says the heritage-listed building should stay in public hands.

“The Minister said they’re not prepared to maintain the building in spite of the fact that we’ve produced a plan that means the cost of maintaining the building would be covered by the cost of the place being rented out by community groups.”
