Facebook is reportedly adding another layer to its location-based features by adding check-ins to events.
The company confirmed the new feature with PC Mag: “We are currently testing a way for people to check in to Events,” Facebook’s Meredith Chin said. “We will be releasing it with the next version of the iPhone app.”
According to an All Facebook report, the option to check in will appear on an icon that will only be available on the day of the event. This feature will also work with the iPhone’s GPS, and the icon will only appear when the user is near the location listed on the Event’s page.
In August, Facebook launched Facebook Places, a location-based tool that lets users broadcast their locations and tag friends at the same place. Users can also see which of their friends are located nearby. Places was incorporated with Facebook Deals, a service that Facebook launched in November, allowing local businesses to offer deals to users that check-in at that particular place.
Foursquare perhaps popularized the concept of the check-in, but other similar companies have popped up and existing companies have added more social aspects to their services.
Google recently added a check-in to Google Latitude via its Google Maps Android app. Yelp has had a check-in feature for well over a year, but recently extended deals to local businesses through “Check-in Offers.”
There’s at least one event that Facebook users won’t be checking into. An Australian teenager was recently forced to cancel her birthday party after she received more than 200,000 RSVPs in what appeared to be a hack.
