THE conversion of Llandeilo’s historic market hall into 13 residential units is the subject of a planning application to Carmarthenshire Council.
The Grade ll listed building, at the junction of Carmarthen Street and New Road, was formerly occupied by the engineering company Brockington Scott.
Various uses for the abandoned hall, which was built in the 1860s by the Stepney Gulston family, have been suggested over the past eight years, but none has been achieved.
The building flourished during the early part of the 20th century with stallholders selling market garden produce, as well as woollen and household goods. In its heyday, concerts – including
Gilbert and Sullivan operas – were frequently held there.
However, it declined during the late 1960s and was taken over by Brockington Scott 20 years later. It has been empty since the company moved its operations to Pontarddulais.
The market, which has a central courtyard covered by a glass roof, has been used as a venue for both the Llandeilo Festival and Ceramica Cymru The latest application for the site, submitted to
county planners on Friday of last week, seeks approval for its conversion into four houses and nine flats.
