PLANS to build luxury homes at a Grade II listed building that was gutted by arsonists look set to be thrown out.
Developers want to convert the former School for Hearing Impaired Children on Lancaster Road in Birkdale into apartments and houses.
However, the proposals, which will go before Sefton’s Planning Committee on Wednesday, have been recommended for refusal.
As part of the plans, Preston-based company Centremodel would transform the building into 27 self-contained apartments.
There would also be 16 detached houses developed on the outlying grounds of the old school.
It was destroyed in a blaze last year that saw residents vacated from their homes.
The fire followed a number of previous arson attacks at the former landmark, which is in the West Birkdale Conservation Area.
Almost 1,000 homeowners have signed a petition to fight a planning application for the development.
Residents have said they are not against the whole project, but are concerned about how it would affect wildlife, green space, noise pollution, traffic and privacy.
Conservative Dukes ward councillor David Pearson believes the site needs a development but that the plans are too large.
He said: “I would like some building to go on to that site because it is being continually vandalised.
“However it has to meet with all the criteria for planning conditions otherwise it is not going to go through.
“I don’t think the accommodation meets these demands. I think they are trying to put a bit too much on that site. They are trying to squeeze every inch out of it.
“The planning officers do not feel that it meets the criteria. Under these circumstances I agree with them.”
Last week chartered planner Paul Sedgwick defended the plans and said they were “very much in keeping with the surrounding areas.”
The planning meeting will take place on Wednesday at 6.30pm at Southport Town Hall.
