WALES’ poshest council house has gone on the market.
But the Gothic-style lodge at the entrance to Swansea’s Singleton Park and within walking distance of the beach is so unique estate agents have been unable to put a price on it.
Instead, house hunters are being asked to put in bids for what is a unique piece of the city’s architectural history.
Singleton Lodge has been put up for sale by Swansea Council. It was a tied park keeper’s home for many years but is now surplus to requirements.
The Grade II listed Lodge in Brynmill was built in the mid- 19th Century by London architect Henry Woodyer for Swansea copper magnate John Henry Vivian.
A Swansea Council spokesman, who would not reveal the level of rent it charged, said: “Rather than leave it empty and allow it to fall into disrepair, the council is hoping the sale will enable the three-storey, three-bed property to flourish for generations to come.”
The lodge, which has been empty since the summer of 2009, when a park keeper moved out, is included in Cadw’s list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest.
It consists of a square three-storey tower with one room on each floor plus an extra two-storey block at the back.
All the windows and doors have dressed stone surrounds and pointed gothic arched heads.
Inside is a kitchen, two reception rooms with beamed ceilings and leaded windows. It has gas central heating and a bathroom. Two of the three bedrooms have sea views.
There is also an enclosed level courtyard. The gateway arch attached to the lodge will remain in Swansea Council ownership but will be accessible to the new owner.
Stuart Rice, the council’s finance boss, said: “We hope this local landmark will make someone’s perfect home.”
Chris Hope, of property agents Dawsons, which is marketing the property, said:”Nothing like it has ever been sold before.”
