URBANA – Two Champaign men who allegedly possessed cannabis for sale are due back in court next month.
Shawn E. Rhodes, 21, who listed an address in the 400 block of North Prairie Street, and Ryan C. Curry, 24, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Crescent Drive, were each charged last week with possession with intent to deliver cannabis. Both had court appearances this week.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said police stopped a vehicle near Elm Street and University Avenue for a traffic violation about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 28 and found that passengers Curry and Rhodes had several bags of cannabis weighing a total over just more than 2 ounces.
Officers then got a search warrant for Rhodes’ apartment, went there later that same night, and found about 31 ounces of cannabis, drug-packaging material, a digital scale, drug paraphernalia and indicators that Rhodes lived in the apartment.
Rhodes was charged with a more serious Class 2 felony because of the amount of cannabis found at his apartment. He faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison if convicted. Curry was charged with a Class 4 felony alleging he had fewer than 30 grams of cannabis intended for sale. If convicted, he faces penalties ranging from probation to one to three years in prison.
Both men remain free on bond and were told to be back in court March 29.
