Bassmaster Classic returns to the Louisiana Delta

The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) was formed by Ray Scott in 1967. The idea was to organize bass anglers for the fun of fishing but more importantly to establish a group large enough to be heard and to help in many conservation efforts over the years. The Bassmaster Classic is arguably the biggest event in bass fishing. Some relate it to the Superbowl of fishing and with it being the first tournament to start the season for the elite series anglers some compare it to the Daytona 500. To bass anglers across America this event is as big as the events listed above and follow it with just as much passion.

The Bassmaster Classic began with great anglers and from those rose a few household names such as Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston and Roland Martin. These three bass anglers won many B.A.S.S. Events but left the tournament trail to pursue a career in television as well as other genres. Three of the biggest names in the sport branched out and helped, through television, to not only popularize the sport of fishing but to help bring awareness to the importance of conservation to the people and showed them how important it was to the future of angling.

The Bassmaster Classic has helped to continue the message to anglers the importance of conservation. Some will argue that it is all just for money and of course money is a factor as it is and has to be in any venture this magnificent. I would have to say do some of your own research and learn what B.A.S.S. Has done for fishing through its conservation efforts. The behind the scenes work that helps all anglers and please note that all of these efforts took money to get it done.

This year the event will be held in the Louisiana Delta and lucky for me I will be camped next to the launch area for the Bassmaster Classic. What better place and time than during the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Bassmaster Classic is bringing attention to an area that bears the name sportsman’s paradise and will help to dispel many myths that the Delta is dead. It is fitting that The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society bring attention to such a wonderful place and to exercise its mission to bring bass anglers together for fun while at the same time helping the people of the Louisiana Delta through conservation awareness and the fact that the Louisiana Delta is as strong as ever.
