Research in Motion has been tight lipped so far about the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet pricing. Three months ago, Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of RIM, stated that PlayBook would be competitively priced and would cost under $500 (Rs. 22,770 approx.). Now comes a confirmation of the BlackBerry PlayBook price. CrackBerry was tipped with listing screen grab at Office Depot, a U.S. based online retailer for office products. As per the listing, PlayBook is expected to be available in Week 17 which means late April this year. RIM’s BlackBerry OS based PlayBook’s Wi-Fi version would be priced at $500 (Rs. 22,770 approx.) and we presume that the Wi-Fi+3G and Wi-Fi+LTE version would be sold at higher price.
Apple started selling 16GB Wi-Fi model iPad for $500 (Rs. 22,770 approx.) and sold a million units in less than 60 days. RIM intends to do something similar. However, RIM might not be that lucky as the consumers already know the options of Galaxy Tab $500 (Rs. 22,770 approx.) (now) and the iPad. Even powerful hardware packing Motorola XOOM with Android 3.0 Honeycomb looks a viable option though priced at $800 (Rs. 36,465 approx.).
Now here arises a problem for RIM – the premium for BlackBerry Services. That might be looked upon as an additional cost for the PlayBook owners.
We’ll leave it for RIM to introduce PlayBook as soon as possible amidst the other next-generation tablets iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 2 – expected to be launched in the coming weeks/months. Competition would turn more gruesome for the tablet makers and consumers will get to see more options.
