The Foundation will be picking up donations door to door in Dedham Thursday, Feb. 10. They also offer electronics recycling for a minimal fee and car donations. Riverdale School Fundraiser – The Riverdale School PTO will hold a fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. at the Irish Alehouse. Tickets are $20 a person (adults only). The 1980s themed fundraiser will include music, trivia, a silent auction, food, raffles and a cash bar. There will be a best male and female ’80s costume winner. All proceeds will go directly to the Riverdale school. Limited number of tickets will be sold at the door. Kid Movie – National Amusements will show “Barbie: A Fairy Secret,” to its Showcase Cinema de Lux location at Legacy Place in February for its monthly Kidtoons weekend event. “Barbie: A Fairy Secret,” is the story of an amazing adventure with Barbie where she learns the power of friendship as she travels through a magical fairyland. In the action-packed journey, Barbie and Raquelle travel through the magical secret fairy world on their hunt to find Ken, who has been whisked away by a group of fairies. Kidtoons is a monthly program hosted by Showcase Cinema de Lux at Legacy Place that is dedicated to helping parents connect with their kids by bringing family friendly animated movies to the big screen. Admission is only $3.50 and a free concession is received with each ticket purchase. The movie will be shown on Feb. 12 and 13 at noon.
Party – All Dedham Parent Time members are invited to the Annual Valentine’s Day Party to be held on Feb. 12, in the DCH gym from 12:30-2:30pm. If you’d like to participate in the optional Valentine’s Day card exchange, please bring 20 or so valentines made out to a ‘special friend’ and your child can go home with a bag of valentines and goodies. Cocktails with Cupid (375 kick-off event) – Enjoy an evening of live music, dancing, hors d’oeuves and fun at Cocktails with Cupid. The event will be a kick-off to the town’s 375 Celebration and will be held at the Endicott Estate on East Street from 7 p.m. to midnight. Cash bar will be available. Science with a Mission – What would motivate a talented scientist to leave her lucrative job to help the poor in developing countries? Join us for an evening with Dr. Alynne MacLean, founder of Science With A Mission, on Monday, Feb.14, at 7 p.m. and be inspired by what you discover. MacLean combined her passion for chemistry with her desire to help people in the developing world when she left her career in biotech to start Science with a Mission, a nonprofit organization that creates low-cost diagnostic tests for diseases (e.g., HIV, malaria, typhoid, hepatitis) that are being used in over 50 countries in the developing world. This free event is part of the “Modern Day Prophet” series presented by the Peace and Justice Adult Faith Formation Committees of St. Susanna. Dedham Community House Summer Camp Open House – The Dedham Community House Summer Camp will be holding the second of four summer camp open houses on Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 6 p.m. until 7:30 pm. Since the 1920’s the Dedham Community House Summer Camp has helped create those lifelong childhood memories of summers filled with fun in the sun. Through a variety of activities which include swimming, archery, arts crafts, sports games, drama, woodworking, fieldtrips, cookouts, special event days and more, your child will have the opportunity to make new friends, new memories and just be a kid! Jazz Classic – The annual Norwood Jazz Classic, featuring local high school jazz groups, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 17, starting at 3 p.m., at the Coakley Middle School (1315 Washington Street, Norwood). The award-winning Norwood High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Steven Conant, will be performing. Invited jazz groups from local schools include Boston Latin, King Philip Regional, Medfield, North Middlesex Regional, Reading, Stoughton, Wakefield, and Wellesley. The groups will be judged for their musical skill by professional adjudicators. The performances begin at 3 p.m. and awards will be presented after all groups have performed. Admission is $5 and all performances are open to the public. Come hear some great jazz and support Norwood’s talented musicians!
Support program – “Caregiver 101” provides information on community resources, support and respite services for elders and their family caregivers. Participants will receive the Family Caregiver Handbook, resource information and will learn successful strategies for managing elder care planning and family decision making. There will be two classes on Thursday, February 17, the first from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the second at 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All sessions will be held at HESSCO Elder Services, One Merchant Street, Sharon.
