Campaigners’ victory to have nature reserve listed as Town Green

CAMPAIGNERS in Thanet have won their fight to have land on Westbrook promenade undercliff protected by listing it as a “town” green.

Steering the project has been Tony Sykes, who last year set up Westbrook Against Selling Promenade Site (Wasps) when Thanet council placed open land by Barnes Avenue car park on a potential asset disposal list.

A Kent County Council spokesman said: “Following a site visit, the regulation committee member panel agreed with the recommend ation that the land next to Barnes car park should be accepted as a town green.”

While waiting for the hearing, WASPS worked with English nature to manage the site as a nature reserve and set up a Friends group.

Their first event will be an open day on Sunday, February 20.

Mr Sykes said: ” We are delighted with the result that protects this land from development and ensures the continued use by local people.”
