HISTORICAL SOCIETY, LIBRARY

Actress Stephanie Jackson will portray Elizabeth Keckly, dressmaker and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln, on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m., in a one-hour, one woman dramatic performance

“They Called me Lizzy … from Slavery to the White House” will be presented in Meeting Room 1, on the lower level of the Bristol Public Library.

The Bristol Historical Society and the Bristol Public Library are co-sponsoring the dramatic presentation in celebration of Black History Month

In lieu of an admission charge, free-will offerings of non-perishable items for the Salvation Army Food Pantry are requested. Refreshments will be served after the presentation.

MANROSS LIBRARY

Manross Library in Forestville will exhibit West African art in the main lobby throughout the month. The Manross Homeschooers program will also be featuring Martin Luther King Jr. and Black history.

Denise Jordan, first African American chief of staff for the city of Springfield, Mass., will give an informal presentation on her position and the role of African Americans in the political process.

“Volume!” workshop on the writing and performing of poetry, with Tai Allen, writer, music producer and workshop facilitator.

Feb. 17, 11:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m., Founders Hall

A reading and discussion of “The Slave Narratives” with poet D. Moss. In the late 1930s, over 2,300 former slaves from across the South were interviewed by writers of the Works Progress Administration.

Lenise NuNuu Smith, poet, writer, actress and spoken word performer, will present her poetry and share theatrical pieces.

ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD

The Office for Black Catholic Ministries will sponsor its eighth annual Black History Month Celebration Mass at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford on Sunday at 2 p.m. with students from various schools, and the Archdiocesan Gospel Choir.
