Warminster town councillors have lost their battle to stop the demolition of an historic property in the town.

The council wanted the original refusal of Persimmon Homes bid to demolish the old farmhouse at 70 Victoria Road and replace it with two semi-detached homes and double garage confirmed, after the
company appealed against it.

Persimmon already has permission to build 197 houses on 15 acres of land next to the house, which was agreed under the old West Wiltshire Development Framework Policy.

Cllr Martin Baker, chairman of the planning advisory committee said: “It is with some regret that I have to report the appeal has been upheld by the government inspector.

“Despite the fact that we have fought hard to retain it, yet again Warminster will lose another significant and historic building.”

The house is part of a row of Victorian and Edwardian houses running from 52-74 Victoria Road.

The government inspector’s report did find that the farmhouse made a ‘positive contribution to the street scene’. However it was not protected as it is not listed or in a conservation area.
