ONE of the listed buildings at Winchester College can have a major internal refit, city planners decided.

New Hall in College Street was only built in the 1960s, but is Grade-II listed by English Heritage, Winchester City Council heard.

The main reason is that it contains a large collection of historic wooden wall panels, chiefly dating from the 17th century.

They originally belonged to the college and then drifted away to other buyers, before being brought back around 50 years ago.

College chiefs want to refit the hall, which will make it suitable for functions as well as providing more backstage space for performers.

They also hope to plug some leaks, which have been damaging some of the panels.

The city council’s planning committee gave the scheme unanimous backing.
