“Five Things you Need to Know Today” is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. With the possibility of some weather related cancellations, call ahead to verify that the events listed below are going to take place.

1. Roundup of cancellations/delays

* Stoughton Public Schools are canceled, in anticipation of what is predicted to be the first of two consecutive snowstorms.

* After school activities, including athletic events, are canceled. The Stoughton High boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were scheduled to play Foxborough (boys’ home, girls’ away).

* The transportation service for the Council on Aging is canceled when Stoughton schools are closed for inclement weather. The Senior Center is open, however, but call ahead (781-344-8882) to see if any activities will be held.

* The Stoughton Public Library is opening an hour later today, at 10 a.m.

2. Meetings around town

Weather permitting, the Board of Selectmen meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Great Hall, on the third floor of the Town Hall. Click here for the agenda.

3. Looking for something to do with the kids on a snow day?

Kidsports is offering a whole cheese pizza and a pitcher of soda/punch for $9.95 plus tax (add $1 for juice). This is for dine-in guests only. The coupon must be printed (see photo gallery) and the offer is only good for today, Tuesday, February 1.

4. Dining tip: Tuesday is Meatball Day at IKEA-Stoughton

Looking for a cheap, yet tasty meal? Every Tuesday, from 4 p.m. until closing at the IKEA Restaurant, their 15-piece Swedish meatball plate (complete with potatoes, cream sauce and ligonberry jam) is only $2.49 (regularly $3.99).

5. Make Chinese New Year Crafts at the YMCA tomorrow

On Wednesday, February 2, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., learn about the year of the Rabbit in the lobby of the YMCA. Create a lantern to take home and display. Activities crafts and snacks will be available.
