ONE of Knutsford’s listed buildings is in such a state of disrepair it has been branded ‘semi-derelict’ by a town councillor.
The former Canvas Lounge building on King Street, next to Piccolinos, has been left empty for almost three years now.
And in that time, it has been neglected to the extent that bits of wood are falling off it and pigeons have decided to use it as a giant nest.
Knutsford town councillors discussed the building at their environment meeting held on Monday, January 17.
Clr Barbara Austin asked for the item to be placed on the agenda and told the Guardian it was about time something was done to stop the unit deteriorating further.
“There is a large hole in the doorway and a friend of mine stepped in to let someone pass by and a piece of wood fell off,” she said.
“It is affecting the businesses in the area and someone really needs to get a grip of it.
“It is a listed building but you wouldn’t know that because it has been played around with so much.”
Clr Austin added that it was important to try and bring it to everyone’s attention.
“There is pigeon muck everywhere and it’s next to a eating place and I would imagine it would put you off going in for a meal anywhere on the street,” she said.
“It has got to the stage where it is nearly derelict and it is worse than an eyesore.
“We really need to be looking after what we have got and protect what can. Somebody has to be responsible for it.”
At the end of the meeting town councillors said they were going to write to the environmental health team and the conservation officer at Cheshire East Council to see if they could help solve the
problem.
A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council, said: “We would like to thank Knutsford Town Council for their concerns.
“This listed building has been vacant for some time, but has been monitored and is watertight and secure. However, officers from Cheshire East Council’s heritage and design team will re-visit the
site this month.”
It is understood that the owners of the new Canvas Lounge, located across the road, do not own the building in question.
