Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec, in cooperation with the British Columbia Provincial Capital Commission and the University of Victoria Art Collections, presents an exhibition on the legislative buildings in 14 Canadian capitals. The exhibition will be held at the Legacy Art Gallery and Café from November 3, 2010 to February 6, 2011.
This art and architecture exhibition takes its inspiration from artistic trends, architects, and technical aspects of parliamentary building construction. It provides general information such as year of construction, cost, and dimensions, and is enhanced by anecdotes on how the edifices were built.
Each provincial seat of power is also represented in a modern painting by the Murale Création team of artists and is accompanied by contemporary and modern photographs.
Mounted on panels, Architecture and Power presents the parliaments in order of their entry into confederation. Thus, visitors travel first to Ottawa, then to Toronto, Québec City, Halifax, Fredericton, Winnipeg, Victoria, Charlottetown, Regina, Edmonton, St. John’s, Yellowknife, Whitehorse, and Iqaluit.
Exhibition content was developed by architecture historian Denyse Légaré and Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec.
The bilingual presentation of this exhibition was made possible through the collaboration of Murale Création, the Canadian Capital Cities Organization, and Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec.
Created in 1995 by the Québec National Assembly, Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec pursues a threefold mission of helping develop and beautify the capital, promoting it through a diverse program of discovery and commemoration activities, and advising the Québec government on how to enhance its status.
The Legacy Art Gallery and Café, located at 630 Yates Street in downtown Victoria, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It operates on a non-profit basis. Admission is free. For more information visit legacygallery.ca or call 250-381-7670
