Stabbing victim listed in fair condition

SIOUX CITY – A pregnant Sioux City woman who police say was
stabbed by her estranged boyfriend is continuing her recovery in a
local hospital, a hospital official said.

Authorities say Kasandra Smith, 20, was attacked Monday morning
in her rental house on South Hennepin Street. They allege Thomas
Rausch Jr., the father of her unborn child, cut her throat and
stabbed her six times.

Smith has been hospitalized at Mercy Medical Center – Sioux City
since the attack, but hospital officials, citing her family’s
request, had not released her medical condition until Thursday.

Mercy Spokeswoman Dianne Krier said Thursday afternoon that
Smith was listed in fair condition and her unborn child was listed
in good condition.

An official with the Woodbury County Jail said Rausch, 20, was
being held Thursday in lieu of a $500,000 bond. He was arrested on
charges of attempted murder, a felony, and nonconsensual
termination of a pregnancy, an aggravated misdemeanor.

According to Iowa Code, a person commits an aggravated
misdemeanor charge of nonconsensual termination of a pregnancy if
they intentionally cause serious injury to a human pregnancy by an
act in a manner likely to cause the termination of or serious
injury to the pregnancy.
