Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce departed Thursday night’s game with what the team is calling a bruised right thigh. He will be examined again on Friday night and will be a game-time decision against the Phoenix Suns.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after Boston’s 10-point win over the Trailblazers that Pierce, who finished with 17 points, made contact with another player. Although he did acknowledge it wasn’t serious, he also made clear that the veteran Celtics didn’t need any more injuries.
“We’ll just wait and see,” Rivers told reporters. “I don’t know if he’ll get X-rays . . . We’ll find out [Friday]. I think he bumped knees [with a Portland player]. We’re hoping it’s nothing more than that.”
Pierce limped to the team bus and told reporters he was going to wait to see if the bruise swelled overnight before deciding if he will play tonight against Phoenix.
