Labour is accusing Rodney Hide’s razor gang of going too far in firing 1200 Auckland Council staff, after 525 new positions were advertised with the council.
Labour’s Auckland Issues spokesman Phil Twyford says Rodney Hide’s Auckland Transition Agency rushed the process and shed jobs unnecessarily.
He says a lot of skills and experience have been lost in the council with the job losses.
Hide said he was confident the Auckland Transition Authority did its best to ensure adequate staff resources and that redundancy payments were kept to a minimum.
But the issues appear to be wider than just staffing.
Contractors Federation New Zealand CEO Jeremy Sole says he had been approached by a number of contractors of the Auckland Council who had not been paid prior to Christmas.
He says he will be meeting with the Auckland Council on Wednesday to discuss the problem.
