The major renovation of an historic building in Croxley Green has been delayed again, in order to protect original green houses on the site.

Three Rivers District Council development control committee discussed the planned works to Little Gillions, in The Green, a locally
listed building in the conservation area.

Developer Andrew Ryde applied to the council for permission to demolish original extensions and outbuildings, including a “Victorian greenhouse”, to make room for new stables, a tennis court and
wildlife pond.

Councillor Amrit Mediratta asked why the developer wanted to demolish the greenhouse and rebuild it to a similar specification, when the original one could be repaired.

The decision has already been delayed from the last development control meeting, to allow councillors to carry out a site visit, and council planners recommended that permission be given.

Leader of the council Ann Shaw said: “We had a very interesting site visit, but I am very, very concerned about the glass houses.

“They are very rare, they either fall into disrepair and fall down or are knocked down. These are characteristic Victorian features and need cherishing and appreciating.

“These greenhouses have been here 130 years and they deserve another month.”
