SAN ANGELO, Texas —
The San Angelo school board will consider during its regular meeting tonight whether to accept a bid of $210,000 for the house at 4401 Brook Hollow Lane, that was built as part of the district’s Career and Technical Education program.
The house was completed in 2009 and was appraised at that time at about $290,000.
Bill Holton, a retired building trades instructor, oversaw the students in the construction of the 2,901-square-foot house. Through the program, students were able to observe, learn and practice skills and, in some instances, assist licensed contractors in the building of a number of homes in San Angelo during Holton’s 25 years of teaching.
“As far as I’m concerned, if the house sells for $1 profit, it doesn’t matter,” Holton said. “It’s all about the kids, about teaching the kids a trade. That profit that you make on those houses has to stay in that building account, to buy new tools or whatever you need for that program.”
Steve Van Hoozer, the San Angelo Independent School District’s director of Purchasing/Special Projects, said the house had been listed for two years.
“It has high-end finishes, it’s a very nice house,” Van Hoozer said. “Mr. Holton always built very nice houses with good workmanship.”
The house was put out for bids, and the sole bid, from Carl and Keturah Ashton, was opened Wednesday.
The board will need to approve a resolution to continue the sale process.
Van Hoozer said the board is also expected to approve a land swap between the city of San Angelo and the school district.
Lake View Stadium is on city land the school district leases from the city. The city, meanwhile, would like ownership of about 14 acres behind and north of Rio Vista Head Start to use to expand Rio Vista Park near the Southside Recreation Center.
“We have (Lake View Stadium) on a 99-year lease. We’re about halfway through that lease and this way we’ll own it,” Van Hoozer said. “If we ever cease to use it for a recreational purposes, it will revert back to the city.”
The swap will allow the school district to continue making improvements to the stadium to benefit the athletic programs that play on the site.
The board meeting is open to the public, and an opportunity to address the board is included in the agenda. The meeting is also recorded for broadcast on SAISD Channel 4.
