A plan for 17 houses in Dearham has been thrown out because the estate would be too near the village’s grade-one listed church.
John Robson Ltd Properties wanted to build the houses at Wilson Farm, off Main Street.
But Allerdale council’s development panel unanimously rejected the plan on Tuesday.
Officers recommended refusal because they felt there were more suitable sites in the village, the scheme would be detrimental to the visual amenity and there was no need for a development on that scale.
The site is near St Mungo’s Church, parts of which date from the 12th century.
Councillor Peter Kendall moved for refusal.
Outline planning application had previously been granted for the building of four houses in 2005 and 2007.
