Hands stolen from listed building Newsome Mill
ALL of the hands have been stolen from the faces of Newsome Mill clock.
And the theft at the landmark building has prompted an outcry from campaigners.
The 19th century, Grade-II listed building is one of Huddersfield’s most endangered, and fresh plans to convert it into more than 40 apartments were drawn up recently.
It has suffered ongoing problems with vandalism, theft and flytipping but heritage campaigners had hoped to keep as many original features as possible.
Diane Sims, marketing and campaigns co-ordinator of Newsome Ward Community Forum, said: “It feels like the final straw, we have had the original features disappearing for years and we have asked for regular checks to make sure the building is secure.
“Nobody seems to want to take responsibility.
“I noticed they were missing at 9.30am yesterday. I’m not sure if the owner has reported it to the police but I’ve passed a message to the local sergeants.
“It’s disappointing, especially after the planning went through. We hoped it would preserve what was there.
“We need to get the message across that people may believe this will be demolished so this kind of theft doesn’t matter, but that is not the case.
“We would be very happy if these could be returned.”
