A 17-YEAR-OLD student has been lauded by her teachers after she was short-listed for a prestigious international art gong.

Sir William Ramsay student Arosah Yaseen, 17, has been named as a contender in the 20-strong field for the Saatchi Gallery/Sunday Telegraph Art Prize.

Arosah’s textile piece, which explores the theme of war and its effect on people and places, will be exhibited all this month at the London gallery.

The winner will receive £2,000 towards art and computer equipment, and £10,000 for the student’s school’s art department, during a ceremony today.

Richard Patrick, Head of Art and Design at the Hazlemere school, said: “It is an incredible achievement”.

The school has also bagged a place on the short-list for the Saatchi Gallery Sculpture at School Prize.

Student Lucy Bignell, 18, whose work will also be exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery from January 20, has designed a stage set scene based on Roald Dahl’s The Twits.

The Rose Avenue-based school is the only school to have students short-listed for both competitions.

Art teacher Katie Moore said: “This is fantastic and I am pleased that the department, and students, are receiving the recognition and confidence they deserve for all the hard work they put in.”

Mrs Moore added these types of competitions “promote what we are trying to do”at Sir William Ramsay, which was designated Buckinghamshire’s first art college in 2000.
