SOUTHPORT’S doomed magistrates’ court could be granted special ‘listed’ status after being inspected by heritage officials.

The 1920s art deco complex, on Albert Road, is controversially set to shut by September, the Ministry of Justice announced in December.

But the iconic building could be heavily protected against future development as English Heritage consider bestowing Grade-II status – given to landmarks such as London’s Alexandra Palace and BT Tower.

The status is awarded to buildings that are “nationally important and of special interest”.

Officials were given a tour of the court last week and met court officials and solicitors.

Rory McCormack of Hoghton Street firm Halliwell, McCormack said: “What English Heritage have said is that it doesn’t matter if the court stays open or closes down, they will judge the complex on its architectural merits.

“From the outside it looks very imposing, but it is only when you’re inside that you realise what a majestic building it is.

“There’s not a court like it in the area. It’s a beautiful building – as I’ve said before, you can imagine Hercule Poirot wandering the corridors.”

English Heritage received the application in September and could advise the Government to award listed status by March.

A spokesman said: “We are still compiling our recommendations to the government who listen to our advice but do not have to take it up.

“We keep our decision confidential until the relevant parties involved in the building are informed.“

North Sefton magistrates’ and Southport county court are among more than 100 UK courts set for closure by the MoJ.

Despite Southport being the 12th largest settlement in the region, criminal cases would be transferred to Bootle, 20 miles away.

Southport MP John Pugh said he had written to Justice Minister Ken Clarke to appeal for the decision to be reconsidered.
