ELIZABETHTOWN —
Firefighters are responding from at least four companies this morning to combat a structure fire at Hubbard Hall.
The historic building was once the Elizabethtown Community House — the first Elizabethtown Community hospital — and was originally built as a home for Orlando Kellogg, Sr. circa 1840. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
Employees at Aubuchon Hardware watched smoke pour out of the upper floor as firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 7 a.m.
“There’s smoke from the top office to the right,” said Bernard Duso, Jr., a manager at the hardware store across the street.
“There are no flames but there’s a lot of smoke coming out of the building, all the way around almost.”
State Police and Elizabethtown Fire Police will close down Court Street at the Route 9 intersection, the main thoroughfare to the county buildings.
Westport, Lewis, Wadhams, Whallonsburgh, and Keeseville fire companies
were called in at around 7:15 a.m. along with Essex County Air One.
Fire captains called for a ladder truck to reach the upper floors of the historic building, which houses several retail businesses and professional offices. It sits in close proximity to other retail stores on Court Street, about a block from the Essex County Court complex.
Fire captains advised Elizabethtown Supervisor Noel Merrihew that they were drawing heavily from the town’s fire hydrant system.
Mineville and Willsboro/Reber fire companies were called in to standby at Elizabethtown and Lewis fire stations.
