A PERTHSHIRE building company has won a prestigious industry award for its mill renovation project near Crieff.

Corryard Developments of Crieff has been voted Master Builder of the Year Scotland – for projects worth more than £250,000 – by the Federation of Master Builders.

The company renovated the grade B-listed Locherlour Mill, close to the Ochtertyre Estate, transforming it from a 19th-century flax mill into five-star eco-friendly holiday accommodation.

The mill now has nine bedrooms and bathrooms, and can sleep groups of up to 18 people.

It also has an orangery and 1.5 acres of landscaped grounds backing on to Ochtertyre Estate.

Corryard Developments managing director John Burke said: “A highly sympathetic restoration was always our priority and, despite its 21st-century features, the mill’s design was largely dictated by our eagerness to preserve one of Scotland’s most significant flax mills for future generations and protect our fragile environment.”

The company worked with Comrie architects James Denholm Partnership and Better Planet at Blairgowrie to ensure the renovated mill would be carbon-neutral.

It has almost a mile of geothermal pipes to provide hot water and under-floor heating for the entire building, and there are future plans to put the old water lade (channel) to use to power a modern electricity generator to supply most of the building’s needs.

The mill is currently on the market at offers over £895,000.
