Ringo’s home 300
THE campaign to save Ringo Starr’s childhood Liverpool home from demolition suffered a setback when English Heritage refused to give it listed building status.
The terraced home, in Madryn Street, Dingle, was rejected by the quango on the basis it was an “unremarkable” building with little real connection to The Beatles.
Drummer Starr lived at the house until he was around four years old before his family moved to nearby Admiral Grove.
On that basis, English Heritage said it lacked the “undeniable” connection to The Beatles that other landmarks such as the London zebra crossing used on the cover of the Abbey Road album have.
It is not known whether the other sites in the city put forward by campaign group Save Britain’s Heritage – such as Strawberry Field and the childhood homes of the other three Beatles – were considered.
Yesterday, Beatles tour guide Phil Coppell said there was a danger Starr’s roots in Liverpool would be “airbrushed out of history” if English Heritage did not preserve the 19th-century terrace.
Mr Coppell added: “They have never listed anything in Liverpool associated with The Beatles because of a link to The Beatles.
“For example, the college was not listed because John went there and the Institute was not listed because Paul went there.
“That said, you could be forgiven for thinking The Beatles were just a duo, because if Madryn Street goes there will be nothing left to suggest Ringo had any connection to Dingle whatsoever.
“We are disappointed, but not surprised.”
