An unnamed Ilkley businessman is the new owner of historic Ilkley mansion Heathcote.

The mystery buyer beat competition from five other potential buyers for the elegant Grade II* listed property, a rare northern example of the work of celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.

The sale was finalised on Christmas Eve, and it is believed the new owner will return Heathcote, on Kings Road, to its original, residential use.

The guide price for the property was more than £2.5 million, but the final purchase price remains under wraps.

Patrick McCutcheon, of estate agent Dacre, Son Hartley, said there had been strong interest in the property.

He said: “We had a lot of interest in Heathcote, there were 37 viewings and we had six offers on it, most of which were people wanting to revert it to principally residential use.”

Built in 1906 as a family home, Heathcote has been used as offices by major Ilkley-based building supplies and service company NG Bailey since the 1950s.

The company, based at Denton Hall near Ilkley, moved out of Heathcote earlier this year. The property went on the market in June, originally with a price tag of almost £3million.

The house stands within 2.88-acre grounds, with ornamental gardens and ancillary buildings.
