Learn to cross-country ski at Weis

Ringwood – Have you ever had the desire to gracefully glide across the snow? The quick learning curve, low injury rate, and natural motions of cross-country skiing allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy themselves while being outside in the fresh air. Weis Ecology Center is offering beginners cross-country ski clinics on Saturdays and Sundays, Jan. 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23. Identical 1 1/2 hour sessions are offered on each date, at 11 a.m or 2 p.m., depending on registration. Learn the basics of cross-country skiing on flat and sloping terrain from personable and patient instructors; then refine your skills on Weis’s field. When registering, include alternate time and date choices as well as shoe size. Space is limited to 20 students; cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers for the instruction only; Call for availability of equipment.

Come take a hike

Ringwood This women’s hike is moderately strenuous, two to three miles in length on Saturday, Jan. 8 from 8 to 10 a.m. Join Weis for these early morning hikes to some of the area’s favorite scenic spots. It’s a great way to enjoy some time outdoors, get some exercise, and get home early enough to spend the rest of the day with family and friends. Hike meets at Weis (may carpool to trailhead if needed). Wear appropriate hiking footwear, dress in layers appropriate for weather and bring plenty of water. Hazardous driving conditions will cancel.

Scouts: earn your geology merit badge

Ringwood Study the materials that make up the earth and the processes that change it over time. In this program scouts will use the surrounding geology to earn their merit badge. The session is on Saturday, Jan. 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is a must and the cost is $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers. There is a limit of 15 scouts per session.
