JCMI hosts Nearly New Sale and Jewish bakery

Think of it as a super Sunday brunch opportunity combined with a sale of gently enjoyed stuff, from fishing gear to jewelry.

It’s Bernie’s Deli and Bubbie’s Jewish Bakery, combined with the Nearly New Sale, this Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island.

“It’s a huge sale,” says Bert Thompson, “… We have a tremendous amount of stuff selling at great prices.”

Tina Boxma listed some of the things for sale: “Books, CDs, electronics, furniture, linens, dishes, jewelry, games and other stuff for children, some hospital equipment and more.”

In the food category, Bernie’s Deli will be featuring authentic comfort food, including Hebrew National hot dogs and salami sandwiches, corned beef sandwiches and Bernie’s famous homemade chicken soup with matzo balls.

“That soup is a fourth generation recipe,” Bert explains. “It’s called Jewish penicillin.”

Bert also explained the name for the baked goods section, “Bubbie’s Jewish Bakery.”

“The word ‘Bubbie’ is a Jewish word for grandma, a fond Yiddish expression for grandma. A lot of these recipes have been handed down from grandmothers to granddaughters.

“It’s all homemade baked goods because many women of the Congregation have been baking and baking for this event.”

Another highlight will be Grandpa Jake’s Original New York Cake Cream Soda, for one dollar.

We asked Bert why this mouth-watering array of goodies is only a one-day event?

“Why don’t you open a Jewish deli and bakery here?” we asked, only partly in jest.

“Well, maybe this will be the catalyst for it,” Bert said. “People have to come on Sunday and if they like it, maybe this’ll happen.”
