The Adelphi, on Vicarage Road, Attercliffe, is being sold through London firm Paramount Investments and is on the market for £220,000, although “unconditional offers are invited”.
Stuart Oliver, agent for the company, said: “The Adelphi is for sale with full vacant possession.”
The Grade II listed building, which opened as a picture house in 1920, has been disused since 2006.
Property developer David Slater, of Spaces Sheffield, whose firm has office and shop premises in Attercliffe, said: “For a buyer it would be an opportunity to add to the area’s leisure offer, change the landscape in Attercliffe, and enhance Sheffield’s cultural credentials.
“The building is certainly of great architectural and historical merit and is the Grand Old Lady of the suburb.
“It would be ideal for redevelopment. The old Burton building next door is also a great building and that’s for sale too.”
Mr Slater said there has been local interest in the building, including using it as a venue for Asian weddings – although Paramount has not revealed whether it has received any bids.
The property developer, who has no interest in buying the Adelphi as it does not fit his portfolio, told The Star redevelopment of the building and open space in front was an urgent priority because the site, off Attercliffe Road, needs “a massive clean-up and is looking a mess”.
The red-brick and terracotta building was designed by architect WC Fenton, with an auditorium which held 1,350 people. It had tiered stalls and circle levels, plus a projection room at the back. It has a kitchen, dining area and offices.
It was one of several venues established in the area during the late Victorian era and early 20th century, when Attercliffe was a thriving hub for steelworkers and their families. Others included the Theatre Royal and Palace, which hosted live shows.
The Adelphi remained a cinema until 1976, then became a bingo hall through the 1990s and until the mid 1990s, when it was converted into a nightclub. It closed in 2006 and has been empty ever since.
The identity of the current owner who is selling the building has not been revealed.
Sheffield Council views the redevelopment of the Adelphi and the open space at the front as a key element of its Attercliffe Action Plan, to revamp the neglected suburb.
Officers have tried unsuccessfully to contact the owner to discuss how the old cinema could be brought into use.
