A man injured in Thursday morning’s fire at The Merion Inn in
Cape May City is in fair condition at Temple University Hospital
Burn Center, authorities confirmed Friday morning.
Firefighters removed Erik Watson through a second floor window
of the burning building and emergency responders flew him to the
medical center in Philadelphia.
The fire started after 7 a.m. Thursday at the historic
restaurant on Decatur Street. Cape May City police, the Cape May
County Fire Marshal’s Office and state fire inspectors are
investigating the cause.
Two other people were saved from the fire by firefighters and
not injured.
The popular destination, built in 1885 and located at 106
Decatur Street near Columbia Avenue, was scheduled to offer
Christmas Eve and Christmas day dinners, as well as New Year’s
events.
The status of those events is unknown at this time.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do, but there is nothing
they can do here,” Cape May Fire Chief Jerry Inderwies Jr.
said.
