A Trade Me user claiming to be a former Pike River Coal employee has placed a rock from the mine on the auction website.

Trader Boyjames, who has been a member since 2005, has listed the “chucky rock” in a bid to raise money.

The trader said he was a former Pike River employee.

“It now appears that our jobs are gone, so I have for sale a rock I found in the coal in Pike,” he said.

“I found it about a week before the explosion. I kept it as my lucky rock and lucky I still claim it to be because I’m still here, but I very much miss my friends that aren’t.”

The trader said he hoped the rock may help his “young family through Christmas”.

He said chucky rocks were rare at Pike and were treasured by coalminers.

“A chucky rock is a rock found in the coal seam, and to this day no-one knows how they get there,” he said.

The auction will close on Monday at 6.30pm. Bidding was at $50 yesterday.
