Local project among those listed in new online tech tracker

COLUMBUS — Looking to promote the tech industry in Ohio, Technology for Ohio’s Tomorrow has launched an online jobs tracker to help the state compete for high-tech jobs.

The idea for the tracker was spurred by a large number of new investments in telecommunications that were made between June and December. Among those that is listed in the tracker is a $66.4 million stimulus award to Horizon in Chillicothe to help bring and expand broadband Internet to 34 southeastern Ohio counties. The public-private partnership will have Horizon kicking in $28.5 million.

Six hundred local community institutions will be connected through Horizon’s fiber optic line, with design, construction and support work creating an estimated 700 jobs.

The online tracker details areas impacted by the new investments, type of investment made, dollar amount and potential job creation. Based on the organization’s estimate, more than $542 million have been invested into Ohio between June and December in telecommunications, with and estimated 20,056 potential jobs created.

“These new investments will improve services for consumers and businesses and create jobs, while also making it easier for our state to compete for high-tech jobs in the future,” said Caitlin Benedetti, director of Technology for Ohio’s Tomorrow.

The group bills itself as a nonprofit coalition of technology consumers, businesses and opinion leaders looking to encourage an environment that will attract high-tech jobs and investment to Ohio.
