Boeing builder keeps list of subs

It just got a little easier for local construction workers who want to make their mark on Boeing Co.‘s 1.2 million-square-foot jet assembly plant in North Charleston.

The $750 million project’s general contractor, BEK/Turner Joint Venture, now requires their subcontractors to give a name and contact information for someone in charge of hiring for the job. It has begun posting that information on its website.

Last week, the online document listed dozens of winning subcontractors who got contracts for everything from installing hangar doors, putting in fire pump hoses and laying down carpeting.

“At least it gives people a way to see what companies are there and what their speciality is,” said BEK/Turner spokeswoman Joan Krause. “It’s not necessarily a list of jobs, but it’s the companies who have the ability to hire.”

Construction workers at the site have already logged more than 1.7 million hours, and the project’s employment number, now at 1,400 workers, hasn’t even hit its projected peak.

Safety first

Away from the bustle of Boeing’s giant jet plant construction, the aerospace giant’s second local project, a 150-worker interior fixtures plant, is starting to get under way at Palmetto Commerce Park.

General contractor Pattillo Construction Corporation of Georgia has hired Greenville-based Carolina Safety Consultants to watch over construction activity at the site. The six-year-old security firm didn’t disclose the terms of the deal.

The plant should be operational by early 2012, just in time to begin sending overhead bins, partition walls and other cabin parts down the road to the 787 jet’s main assembly plant.

Northwestward expansion

Greystar Real Estate Partner‘s management division is has purchased Seattle-based Glacier Real Estate Services and its portfolio of 32 multifamily properties and nearly 400,000 square feet of commercial space scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest. Glacier officials focused on multifamily and commercial properties in the Seattle area. The acquisition expands the Charleston-based property management giant’s already impressive reach. In all, the company manages more than 175,000 units divided up among 640 properties located in more than 100 metropolitan areas.
