SEPANG, Nov 28 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to drop archery from the ‘Road To London 2012’ programme following the dismal performance of the national squad at the SEA Games in Laos, Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and Asian Games in Guangzhou which concluded Saturday.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the decision was made due to the failure of the archery squad to bring back any medal from Guangzhou.
“We are most disappointed when the event which is listed in the ‘Road To London 2012’ programme failed to show a positive achievement and this should not have happened,” he told reporters after welcoming the return of the country’s chef-de-mission Datuk Zolkples Embong and karate exponents from Guangzhou, China Sunday.
Besides archery, three other events listed in the ‘Road To London 2012’ programme are badminton, cycling and diving.
“After receiving the post-mortem report, we will review the sports events that have the potentials of contributing Malaysia’s first gold medal at the Olympic Games 2012,” he said.
Ahmad Shabery said there was a strong possibility that the ministry would replace archery with shooting in the ‘Road To London 2012’ programme.
The national shooting squad put up a positive showing in Guangzhou when they brought back a bronze medal through Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event.
The national athletics squad failed to defend the silver medal won by Roslinda Samsu, four years ago in women’s pole vault and Noraseela Mohd Khalid in the women’s 400m hurdles.
Malaysia improved its medal tally at the games this time occupying the 10th position out of 45 countries after winning nine gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze medals.
The country’s nine gold medals came from wushu (one), cycling (one), bowling (two), karate (two) and squash (three).
