Vallejo’s 33rd on dangerous city list – Vallejo Times

A crime ranking survey released Monday listed Vallejo as the 33rd most dangerous city in the country.

In addition to Vallejo, the annual survey by CQ Press, a division of SAGE Publications, also listed other East Bay Area cities. Oakland and Richmond were ranked fifth and sixth respectively.

CQ Press said its rankings are based on six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors said in a statement Monday that the list is “a premeditated statistical mugging of America’s cities.”

The Conference of Mayors said the rankings “provide no insight into the many variables that mold the crime in a particular town, city, county, state, region or other

jurisdiction.”

It also said the list isn’t an accurate predictor of a person’s crime risk because it doesn’t take into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle and the neighborhood were a person lives.

Vallejo Mayor Osby Davis agreed that the study had failed to include other factors to present a credible ranking.

“I don’t give a lot of credence to a national survey ranking when they have not even taken the time to interview local police or local city officials,” Davis said.

He said the survey was based on too little information for any one to make any intelligent conclusion.

“I don’t think with that kind of ranking you can say that people are 33 times more likely to experience crime in Vallejo,” he

said.

Vallejo, added Police Chief Robert Nichelini, “is substantially safer now then it was 15 years ago.”
