If you’re like us, Thanksgiving probably isn’t going to cut into your week as much as you might like. But while we’re still providing plenty of high-quality content about movies past, present and future, and you’re struggling through a few more days of staring at the walls of your office cubicle while awaiting that turkey dinner, take a gander at some of the moviegoing choices you have over the next week. Oh yeah, sure, you could go see ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ for the fifth time, or discover precisely what “slow justice is no justice” means by checking out Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Faster,’ but we’ve collected a short list of films and film-related events being offered as dessert to your holiday feast with the family.

Austin

If you’re looking for a little culture in addition to fun, make sure you check out the November 22 screening of Buster Keaton’s ‘The Cameraman,’ featuring a like score performed by Bee vs. Moth. Keaton’s glorious performances are only outshown by his filmmaking expertise, and seeing one of his most groundbreaking works accompanied by a live band should make for a memorable night. On November 23, join your fellow Harry Potter fans at the Alamo Drafthouse Lamar for a ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ Feast, featuring a five-course meal and of course a screening of the blockbuster first half of Warner Brothers’ adaptation of the final novel in the series. Chicago

On November 26 and 27, the Music Box Theatre is showing a Sing-A-Long version of Robert Wise’s iconic musical, ‘The Sound of Music.’ Although the film just arrived on Blu-ray with a sterling new high definition transfer, the big screen is the best way to see this epic film, especially if your involuntary parroting of “My Favorite Things” will be embraced rather than discouraged. Dallas

When Tommy Wiseau first released ‘The Room,’ it’s hard to imagine he expected it to become such a cult smash. But seven years later, the film keeps chugging along and playing to gobsmacked audiences – this week in the heart of Texas. Los Angeles

On November 26 and 27, the New Beverly Cinema is playing ‘The Sweet Smell of Success’ and ‘Some Like It Hot,’ a double-feature tribute to the late Tony Curtis. ‘Hot’ is a comedy classic that remains as funny today as when it was first released, but definitely check out ‘Success’ if you haven’t seen it before; Alexander Mackendrick’s film is one of the most prescient and incisive portraits of Hollywood publicity ever put on celluloid. And on November 27, the Egyptian Theatre, in conjunction with the American Cinematheque, is showing none other than Victor Fleming’s ‘Gone With the Wind’ on the big screen. As one of the biggest movies ever made, Fleming’s film not only deserves but absolutely must be seen on the silver screen. New York

From November 24 to 27, The Sunshine Theatre is showing an exclusive engagement of the most famous of all films about the Big Apple: ‘The Muppets Take Manhattan.’ Although (or perhaps because) my strongest memory of the film is a Burger King collectible glass with an image of Miss Piggy riding a motorcycle through a stained-glass window, this has got to be the must-see movie next weekend. Also from November 24 to 27, the IFC Center is showing none other than Bruce Lee’s most famous film, ‘Enter the Dragon.’ The combination of Robert Clouse’s effective storytelling, Lalo Schifrin’s terrific score, and Lee’s too-fast-to-follow moves is simply undeniable, and seeing it on film is simply too rare to resist. San Francisco

On November 24, head over to the storied Castro Theatre for a unique but unforgettable double feature of two early 1980s classics – Martin Scorsese’s ‘Raging Bull’ and Paul Schrader’s ‘Mishima.’ Both are unquestionably worth seeing but it should be noted that the print of ‘Bull’ is brand new, so look forward to stellar presentation of this iconic film.
