A WAR memorial which has just been restored could be listed so that is is protected for future generations.
Delicate work to restore the face has been carried out at the memorial in Chorley New Road, Horwich, with £600 of the cost being funded by Horwich Town Council.
It followed the recutting of the names of the town’s fallen heroes, which were badly weathered.
The town council received a £2,500 grant from the War Memorial Trust towards the £5,675 cost of recutting the names.
Cllr Stephen Rock, leader of Horwich Town Council, said: “We have spent quite a bit of money on restoring the memorial.
“It is an asset to the town for the future and it shows we care about the people who have given their lives for our country and those who are still doing so.
“For it to be protected forever is good news for the people of Horwich.
“If the Loco Works are developed under the core strategy it would be a good for it to be preserved.”
An English Heritage spokesman said: “We have received a listing application for the war memorial on New Chorley Road.
“The report outlining our recommendations to the Department of Culture Media Sport is with an English Heritage adviser at the moment and we aim to submit the report by the end of the year.”
