The seven elected trustees of the local Catholic school board amassed a combined $16,868 in expenses between September 2009 and August 2010 with mileage costs making up more than half of the costs to taxpayers.
The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board received the list of expenses without discussion during its monthly board meeting Tuesday night.
Clarington trustee Granville Anderson led the pack claiming $5,675 in total expenses with $3,000 in mileage costs, $26 in meeting expenses and $2,648 listed for events and professional development.
Board chairman David Bernier, representing Northumberland, was a close second, claiming $5,641 in total expenses with $2,462 in mileage costs, $37 in meeting expenses and $3,141 listed for events and professional development.
Peterborough County trustee Joe Whibbs had the fewest expenses, claiming only $100 in total.
The following is a breakdown of the other trustee expenses (mileage/meeting expenses/events and professional development):
¦ Clarington trustee Maureen Day claimed a total of $2,174 in expenses ($1,864/$0/$310)
¦ Kawartha Lakes trustee Camille Parent claimed a total of $1,724 ($1,160/$0/$563)
¦ Peterborough trustee Christine Dunn claimed a total of $1,164 ($325/$0/$839)
¦ Peterborough trustee Lorne Corkery claimed a total of $386 ($0/$0/$386)
While covering an area that spans four counties and regions, the Catholic board has seven trustees, including two for Peterborough city and one for Peterborough County. The chairman for the board receives $15,220 per year while the vice-chairman receives $12,360 per year. School trustees are paid a stipend of $9,500 per year. On top of that, trustees are paid expenses covered by board policy.
