AN HISTORIC Burnley public house could be given a new lease of life as family homes.
Developers have unveiled plans to transform the Grade Two listed Malt Shovel, in Hargrove Avenue, into five houses.
A previous application to turn the former pub into apartments was approved but developers said that was no longer viable due to the number of similar apartments in the town.
Coun Ida Carmichael, who represents the ward, said: “I think it will be probably be an improvement to the area.
“It’s a shame to lose a drinking establishment down there but anything that improves the area is a bonus.
“It’s a prime property site and we should make the best use of it.”
A spokesman for the planners, who have submitted the application on behalf of Manchester-based Hometrader, said: “The public house has ceased trading.
“Its location meant that it could not rely on passing trade and therefore depended particularly heavily on the local community for trade.
“However, as a consequence of the cumulative effect of lifestyle changes implemented individually by local people the public house was no longer the focus of the community and business declined.”
The pub tried to diversify by offering bed and breakfast but continued to struggle. The opening of the new Express Holiday Inn in Pendle Way contributed to its decline.
It closed down last year and was sold for £175,000 by Pugh Auctions at an auction in Manchester in July .
Developers said the conversion would require ‘very few’ alterations to the outside of the pub, with just the demolition of a porch and some other minor alterations.
Inside the pub the floor plan and historic roof structure will be retained with alterations made to the walls and the blocking off of some openings.
